Ryan nodded. “You’ve really been through it,” he said
softly. “Which is even more reason not to want to interfere with you two.”
Shawn sighed. “You wouldn’t be interfering. Kayla’s a
stronger person than Peggy ever was. I don’t think she’d just get freaked
out and run away.”
Ryan looked at her. “What about you? How do you feel?”
Kayla thought of what Shawn had told her about getting
Ryan to stay home and not risk his life in dangerous places. She thought about
pleasing Shawn. And she thought about the chance to have two incredibly
gorgeous guys make love to her at once, to be completely surrounded and
held in simmering masculinity. “If what Shawn and I have is special, we
can’t lose it. I trust him.”
Ryan laughed softly and shook his head. “Man, Shawn, you
really have changed your taste in women, haven’t you?”
Shawn grinned. “Only for the better.”
Ryan turned as much as the seatbelt would let him. When
he did so, the denim of his jeans brushed her legs, sending shivery heat
right up into her slit. Already she felt her nipples tighten in her bra.
“Well, if you really honestly feel that way.”
Kayla nodded, aware that she fast becoming breathless.
“I really feel that way.”
Ryan’s breathing deepened, its sensual rhythm syncopated
by the scrape of the windshield wipers on the glass. “In that case, I’m
honored you trust me too.”
Shawn glanced at him. “Does that mean you’ll help her?”
He nodded, now gazing fully at her. “Yeah, I’ll help
her.”
Shawn nodded. “Great.”
Ryan looked from Kayla to his brother. “Does this mean I
can get started right now?”
Shawn grinned. “I guess so. Just don’t get so overheated
that I can’t drive. I don’t want to cause an accident.”
Ryan smiled. “I promise I won’t.”
Kayla’s breath caught as Ryan lifted his hand to her
face and touched her cheek, his fingertips circling in a whispery pattern
over her skin. His touch sent shivers through her. It was so similar to
Shawn’s tender, attentive touch, yet different. The weird part was that she
didn’t feel as if Ryan was a stranger. The fact that he
was Shawn’s brother and that they were so close made her feel like
she’d known him for a long time.
His thumb traced over her bottom lip. “Tell me about
this story you’re writing.” His breath, minty from a piece of gum he’d been
chewing and had discarded a bit earlier, caressed her face. He’d shaved
before supper and the spicy smell of aftershave invaded her nostrils,
making her feel pleasantly heady.
“Well, it’s about a young woman whose father is forcing
her to marry a man she hates. Instead of giving in, she flees.”
“Mm-hmm.” Ryan traced an invisible line from her chin
onto her throat. He bent his head and pressed a small kiss onto her temple.
The things he was doing to her made it difficult to
think or speak. Her nipples tingled furiously while the rest of her melted
against him.
“Go on.”
