Joe hid in his office until almost eight o’clock. Holly had knocked and asked if he was coming out to eat, but he’d begged off, saying he’d grab a sandwich when he was finished.

Now as he prepared himself to face Holly, the war in his head was still playing. He’d known Holly all her life. What kind of man had fantasies about a woman who’d practically grown up in his house? Then again, Holly had definitely been trying to seduce him earlier. Was it so bad that he wanted her as much as she seemed to want him? They were both well over the age of consent. From what Annie had told him, Holly didn’t give most men the time of day, so why him? What could that beautiful creature possibly see in such an old man?

With a deep breath, he unlocked the door and went through the hall to the kitchen. Holly was at the sink washing dishes when he stepped into the room. “I’m sorry about earlier,” he said.

Holly looked over her shoulder and Joe nearly fell to his knees to beg her forgiveness. The sadness evident in her red puffy eyes made him feel lower than low. He wanted to take away her pain, to hold her in his arms and give them both what they seemed to desire.

He opened his mouth to explain himself, but Holly turned and held up her wet hand, stopping him. “I’m the one who owes you an apology. I acted like a slut and tried to push you into acting on something you’re obviously not ready for.”

Joe walked the few feet that separated them. “No,” he said and put his hands on Holly’s hips. “Please don’t tell me you’re sorry. Just knowing someone as special as you is interested in a boring old doctor…”

Joe pulled her closer. He looked into her eyes and lowered his head. “I’m gonna kiss you,” he warned.

As Joe’s mouth descended on Holly’s, the sparks between them ignited into a full-blown blaze.
